A Fairy-Sized Project Spellcheck Update!

Art by Koseki

While Project Wardens continues to go through a reconceptualizing whirlwind, pretty much everything regarding Project Spellcheck has been relatively steady. Things have been added, adjusted, and abolished, but the vast majority of details pertaining to the world, plot, and characters have held steady.

For now, the focus of the initial story arc of Meeko’s origin story, including how he came to become a magician, his first grand adventure, his first encounters with other key characters, and so on. This arc is also intended to highlight the early history of the Kingdom of Lancet and its entanglement with the Majus, the earliest-known human practitioners of the magics, as well as the culture of the magician profession, which is not only frowned upon, but is also host to a crew of rather cutthroat competitors. Future stories big and small will cover the many other aspects of the Project Spellcheck world, but for now, that’s what I would like to prioritize as the “main” story.

With that said, I still haven’t decided on a specific way to tell Project Spellcheck’s story. I definitely believe it belongs in a more visual medium as I am eager to have the world and its characters and stories presented to audiences, rather than simply described. I’m sure this makes me sound vain or, worse, an “idea guy,” but I’ve just never had a lot of aptitude when it comes to the art of, well… art. Instead, I’ve been lucky to be able to work with incredibly talented artists such as Koseki and Courtney Godbey, whose showcased art in the website’s gallery have wonderfully captured the essence of what I aim to bring with the characters I have created.

While I can’t do much on my own when it comes to anything on the artistic side, I still intend to do what I can with what I have. While Project Spellcheck’s primary story (or stories, should I happen to be so lucky) will have to remain on the backburner while I gather enough tinder to match my ambitions, I can at least explore the misadventures of Meeko and the other denizens of Lancet through my Writer’s Wall rambles and my Story Corner side-narratives. Each time I write, I get a little wiser to my methods and mindset and, optimistically, a little sharper and more able to tell the story I dream of making someday.

But you can’t do all your work in a hole and expect people to pop their head in and offer complements or criticism by random chance. As a talent agency once said that a Greek philosopher once said, “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity,” and I’ll be pressing myself to be more ambitious when it comes to those opportunities.

In the meantime, if you want to check out existing work on Project Spellcheck, here’s the link to all blog posts in the Project Spellcheck category. As always, your feedback is greatly appreciated, and I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I do making them!
